Operational Management

Operations management is a field of management which deals mainly with planning and designing the processes of production, reorganizing business processes and redesigning company operations in order to increase efficiency and profitability. It is a broad term that includes several sub-disciplines and it requires the application of diverse principles and strategies, ranging from human resources to technology, manufacturing to financial management. It also involves various methods of measuring performance, such as product performance, sales performance and customer satisfaction, and provides direction and control over the organization’s activities.

This management field has many areas to cover including production process improvement, sales management, supply chain management, marketing, service control, financial management, and planning and controlling costs and risk. This type of management is used by businesses in different settings from small family businesses to large conglomerates.

Operational managers are responsible for all aspects of the manufacturing and distribution process. For example, in manufacturing firms, they usually supervise manufacturing operations and supervise production process.
