The first major section of the exam involves studying Sociological Theory and the field of Sociological Methodology, which are related disciplines. Students will need to demonstrate that they know at least the basics of these theories and methods.
Students will also be tested on their ability to analyze and interpret data in order to create and present a case for their findings. They will need to demonstrate a thorough understanding of statistical and/or empirical procedures, as well as an ability to manipulate and interpret data. These skills are also related to basic courses in mathematics as well.
Throughout the exam, students will be expected to write essays based on the basic course material they have studied. They will also be required to complete some related research papers, which will include examples and explanation about their findings.
Students may be expected to answer many test questions that include written, oral, and numerical portions. Students who have not yet taken a sociology course may find the exam to be difficult; however, all students should have no problem passing the exam if they work hard.
For those who have already taken a sociology course, the Sociology Exam will likely seem easy because most courses tend to cover a wide variety of topics. However, the exam will still require a student to apply what he or she has learned from previous classes. As such, students should make sure to look over and review everything they have learned. This will help them remember and apply concepts that they learned from previous courses, as well as those they will learn in this semester’s exam.
