This can be seen in real life in many ways, including having realistic expectations for the future. If we are not ready to commit to achieving our goals, then it becomes impossible for us to have the things we desire.

Hypothetical expectations are based on what would have been, were things to be the way we see them. These can be compared with the hypothetical statements that you might hear someone make about their own life.
